But first, an explanation

I love music, duh. It has been the driving force for most of my 24 years and it's importance in my life seems to be increasing daily. Unfortunely for a large portion of my life, my music tastes were not very diverse. I still have bad habits of listening to the same cd in my car for a month, and I'm constantly out of the loop on artists or songs that my peers know very much about.

I'm also a terrble writer. I never stick to the same tense, I change person, and I often talk the way I type, which is often hard to understand. I'd like to get better at these things.

So here be Madly Beckons (an anagram for my name sadly, I'm not too creative when it comes to names), a place to expand my music knowledge and to better my writing skills. The premise is this:

- Every two weeks I will search out someone to recommend me 5 albums.
- I will then go out, buy said albums, and take a listen.
- Over the next two weeks I'll publish reviews and thoughts on the music and probably more

So, yes. That's about it. Questions, comments are greatly appreciated, as are writing critiques! It's been awhile since I took an English class, so you're critisizim is encouraged. I have an artist in mind for the first installment of Madly Beckons - once they confirm I will get to a posting.

ETA: Changed things to doing 5 cds every month, not ever two weeks. I am a lot more poor then I thought I was a year ago

  1. Oh man, listening to the same CD in my car for a month is a bad habit? Crap. That's the only way I can actually get to know an album. In fact, it often takes a good couple of weeks just to have an album begin to grow on me. Case in point: Justin Townes Earle's Midnight at the Movies. I'd be a terrible music reviewer.

  2. My problem for me that comes along with the same cd for a month, is the over-listening thing. I usually don't notice it at the time, but if I switch out to something new... I rarely wanna come back to anything on that cd. I did that with Raising Sand. I looooooved that album. To death actually. Now most of the time if one of the songs comes up on my iPod rotation, I usually skip it. Which breaks my heart because I know the songs are amazing, except that I've listened to them all upwards of 35 times, and now I'm done with it. And because I don't realize it when I'm listening... it's really hard for me to know when I've overdone it. Does this make any sense??

  3. Oh, I know exactly what you mean. It's the very reason why I have to skip every Nirvana song that comes on the radio. All great songs, but I just can't listen to them after having heard them hundreds of times each.
